Free Self-Serve Bike Repair

Roll on in and check out Saluki Spokes, located in the Student Center Craft Shop, courtesy of the 2008 Student Affairs Innovation Awards. Saluki Spokes has basic materials and tools to fix your bike and get back on the road. Tools are free to use at the Craft Shop. The Student Center also has an exterior self-service fix-it station located at the south entry of the building.

Paid Basic Bike Services

Saluki Spokes also has paid services with a bike mechanic throughout the week to help with basic repairs if you do not know how to fix your bike. Drop your bike off and fill out a work order during Craft Shop hours and our tech will call you when your bike is repaired.

Basic repairs include - airing up tires, fixing flat tires, replacing tubes, adjusting breaks, handlebars, and seats.

We do not fix electric scooters.

No appointment is needed. Drop your bike off any time during shop hours, and our bike mechanic will fix it and call you when it is done. If you have questions, email craftshop@siu.edu or call (618) 453-3636.

We hope that students, staff, and faculty increase their bicycle usage on the SIU campus.

Bike Watch

Saluki Spokes community Bike Watch

Do you cycle on campus? Do you worry about the safety and security of your bicycle? Here is an opportunity to get involved.

Saluki Spokes' Bike Watch is designed to combat bicycle theft on the SIU Campus by getting the community involved. This works like the "Amber Alert" system on a small scale. The Bike Watch community helps find the bike by keeping on the lookout for bikes that are posted on this sight. The quicker the information is posted the better the results.

Here's how it works:

Before your bike is stolen:

  1. Register your bike with the SIU Parking Division.
  2. Send us an email stating you are interested so that we can add you to the list of participants or be our friend on Facebook.
  3. Take a picture of your bike, and record down the serial number, make, model, color, defining features, etc. (if you need help, come to the Craft Shop!).

If your bike is stolen:

  1. Report the theft to the Campus Police at (618) 453-3771 or Carbondale Police at (618) 457-3200 depending on where it was stolen. Then report it to Saluki Spokes Bike Watch Announcement Service by emailing the picture and recorded information to craftshop@siu.edu.
  2. Saluki Spokes will contact all members of Bike Watch with a posting containing all information.
  3. Members help get the word out and help look for your bike.
  4. When found, the owners will be contacted. The owner of the bike may need to call Campus Police or Carbondale Police to retrieve the bike.

The SIU Saluki Spokes program aims to make bicycling a more accessible option for students, faculty, and staff. Bicycling is a healthy, affordable, and environmentally friendly way to travel, and the program seeks to enhance its convenience for the SIU community.
