This one-night wheel-throwing workshop is perfect for beginners and those wanting a refresher. Great way to get introduced to the steps of throwing pottery from start to finish using the pottery wheel to make a simple cup. Come back and glaze or pick your glaze and our staff will glaze it for you. All materials are included.

Make custom greeting cards! This class will use a linoleum plate and carve a design into your printing plate. We will then use our print press to transfer the image onto the paper with printing ink. This is a great class to share a handmade item. Valentine's Day is right around the corner would as be a great way to make a series of custom valentines for friends and family. Materials are included.

Learn how ceramic glazes are made! The workshop will focus on experimentation, we will make test tiles and explore how to make ceramic glazes. The class will learn to find a recipe and mix our own cone04 glazes from recipes and create test tiles. We will use the new kiln we received as part of the SIU Student Green Fee to fire tiles and view the results during the second session of the workshop.

Join us for an afternoon of tie-dying with indigo! We will take inspiration from traditional Japanese Shibori dying techniques and patterns. Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique using folding, stitching, twisting, or bunching cloth and binding. Items are then submerged in a blue indigo dye bath. This technique creates unique patterns in the bold blue of indigo.
Please bring 2 - 4 pre-washed 100% cotton or natural fiber items. Items to dye must be prewashed and 100% cotton, white, or light-colored. Please prewash items to remove factory sizing from the fabric, this will allow the dye to adhere to the fabric. Ideal items include button-down shirts, t-shirts, tanks, leggings, white jeans, tote bags, dish towels, pillowcases, and sheets. Old or stained items will also work as the dye will cover any stains on the fabric. A selection of cotton tote bags, pencil cases, pillowcases, and bandanas are available to purchase at the Craft Shop supply store.

Learn the basics of throwing clay on the potter's wheel. Each week will focus on how to make a different form on the wheel from cups, bowls, and plates. The final class will focus on glazing and finishing. A return visit will be needed to pick up the final work after the glaze firing approximately 2 weeks after the last class. Perfect for beginners or those wanting to improve their skills.

Create handmade paper from start to finish using recycled materials. You will learn how to prep materials to create paper pulp, design, and cast sheets of paper using our Hollander Beater. Students will be taught the basic skills of stained glass to complete a small (5x7 – 6x9) panel using simple geometric shapes. The class will create a project using class patterns, cutting, grinding, copper foiling, soldering, and finishing. Beginning to immediate skills levels welcomed. Closed-toed shoes are required. Materials are extra, and a large selection of stained glass is available at the Craft Shop supply shop.

Perfect project to add a custom look to an apron for the kitchen or the studio while learning the skills of linoleum block printing. This workshop will teach you how to design, cut the printing plate with gouges, and print with a linoleum block to create patterns or imagery of your design. During the workshop, you will print a series of prints on paper using our block printing press as practice and then a final copy on a cotton apron. Print one image or multiple to create a pattern. We will be printing on a black apron with white or light colors inks. Younger students can use the foam print technique. Materials are included: 4x6 printing block, cotton apron, paper, and printing supplies.

Learn the building blocks of ceramics during this hand-building workshop! This workshop focuses on creating clay sculptures or sculptural functional ware using coil and pinch methods. The first class will focus on construction and the following will focus on refining and decoration with bright bold underglazes. Our staff will glaze projects with a clear glaze or come back and glaze yourself.
A return visit will be needed to pick up the final work two weeks after the glaze firing. Clay is extra and can be purchased at the Craft Shop Supply Store. Firing is included in the cost of the workshop.
